Sun style is the youngest of the major styles. It was created by Sun Lu-tang (1861-1932). He first mastered 2 distinct internal martial styles before he learned Wu- Hao style Tai Chi.  He used the stepping method from Ba Gua Zhang, the waist and leg methods from Xing Yi Chuan and the body softness of Wu-Hao tai chi and Sun style tai chi was born. He was one of the first martial artist to make martial books available to the public and the fist to break tradition and publicly teach women. His hope was students would learn martial arts not to fight but to improve their health of the body. His secret "was to seek balance of practice". His original family form  is 98 postures.

Currently four different classes of Sun style is taught depending on level of activity, health and intention. Sun Competition 73, Tai Chi for Healthy Joints and Tai Chi for Arthritis Part 1 and 2 .

  Who Participates in Sun style classes?  

Students of all ages and abilities study Sun style tai chi. It is fluid and smooth with an  underlying current of internal energy in the spiral movements. Added to the spiraling, is the frequent and intentional use of Qigong, so students report they feel the energy (or Qi) faster in Sun style. The tempo is slow so you can learn about your body and posture and how you can improve and strengthen muscles supporting joints. The stance is higher so it is easier to practice without joint involvement. Breathing and mind intention lead to relaxation which leads to pain relief and increased confidence in moving. Hints are given to put tai chi in the most simple movements of daily living such as standing. Many students DO NOT have arthritis or chronic conditions but like the idea of a shorter easier form that quickly gives health benefits.


Tai Chi For Arthritis is one program of many from the Tai Chi for Health series developed by Dr Paul Lam that empowers people to improve their health and wellness. Tai Chi for Arthritis helps people with arthritis or other chronic conditions grow stronger, feel better and take control. It is designed for individuals with  arthritis, rheumatic diseases, or related musculoskeletal conditions (there are over 100 different conditions under arthritis)  It can be done sitting or standing. Many students DO NOT have arthritis or chronic conditions but like the idea of a shorter easier form that quickly gives health benefits. There may be people in the class who do not have arthritis but would like an introductory class into tai chi.


Tai Chi for Arthritis/Healthy Joints  is taught at the studio using Dr Lam's program, has information about arthritis but also has additional healthful Qigong added. As students become more knowledgeable, confident and stronger they may choose to go from Part 1 to Part 2. The Depth of TCA goes over each martial aspect and the essential principles are highlighted. Additional movements are added to make a total of 41. Progression movements can be added if desired.

Sun 73 is the competition form from China. It was designed and modified from the  original form. It is not taught to learn to compete at Community Tai Chi but rather to give the serious student a natural progression and showcase of incredible movements that were created by Sun Lutang. Therefore the form is longer but full of fun challenges and more spiraling energy. Postures are modified for for students' ability or body.

  How Sun Style  Tai Chi Can Be Effective For Healthy Joints and Arthritis

In 1997 Dr Paul Lam, an Australian family doctor since 1974 and a practitioner and medal winner of tai chi,  realized the need of a specially designed tai  chi program for people with arthritis. His team of tai chi associates and medical specialists created the 12 movement Tai Chi for Arthritis program based on the Sun style.


The program is now adapted by the Arthritis Foundation of USA and Australia, and supported by Arthritis Care of UK, and many other arthritis foundations worldwide. Clinical and research studies show this program to be safe and effective for people with arthritis.  It is endorsed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as one of their recommended evidence based Fall Prevention programs and is one of the highest level evidence based programs of the Agency on Aging.

The Sun style, one of four widely recognized styles, was chosen as being particularly effective for people with arthritis since it is characterized by:

  • Agile steps with many forward and backward movements: After any movement forward or backward with one foot, the other foot follows, providing more mobility and opening of the hips, which is very helpful to people with arthritis

  • Powerful Qigong exercise facilitates healing, improves breathing and facilitates relaxation. Qigong is particularly effective for healing and repairing cartilage, inflamed joints and tendons

  • Its high stance makes it easier for beginners of any age or condition to learn who are primarily seeking the health benefits of tai chi

  • Its great artistic depth that challenges students.

  Twelve Tai Chi Movements Learned

Part 1 class consists of 12 movements, special warm ups, cool downs, breathing, and Qigong exercises all with joint friendly precautions. Participants will be challenged by reversing the direction of the 12 movements. Part 2 consists of 10 additional movements (total of 32) that can be added to increase the depth of practice. As students progress then they move into a standard class of 73 movements or continue to take depth class of the 32 movements.

Regular and consistent participation in class and "playing" (practice) at home will maximize the benefits and strengthen the learning process.

  Class Structure and Information


   Please read general information about Classes offered by Community Tai Chi
  • Each class lasts 60 minutes
  • Pre-registration is required because:

    •  There is a size limit  for class

    •  Personal instruction is emphasized as well as group instruction.

  • Sessions are scheduled in a 12 week series, with one class per week.
